Decentralized hydrogen recovery (ammonia cracking)

Subproject 3

Cracking catalysts are optimized with regard to their activity and stability for operation in:

  • ohmic reactors (electrically heated) by using electrically conductive catalyst carrier materials,
  • reactors with integrated combustion or heating by engine exhaust gas,
  • membrane reactors.

Demonstrators of these reactor types are being developed for this purpose. The improvement of the selectivity as well as the mechanical and thermal stability of the membranes for the membrane reactors is the subject of the development work. Furthermore, the performance of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is to be extended to the low-pressure range (against vacuum). The aim is to further reduce the operating costs of the cracking process for certain applications. The robustness and efficiency of the production of purified hydrogen by the membranes and PSA are to be verified.
